00's Emo Trends That We're Better Off Without

I’ve already made my case for 00s emo trends that deserve a comeback in 2021, so it’s only fair I balance it out with emo trends that I’m glad to see the back of.

Every teenager has gone through questionable fashion choices, and looking back on the past often comes packed with a high cringe-factor, but emo has had more than its fair share of cringe moments, questionable idols and dodgy fashion trends.

Dead straight and heat damaged in the front and backcombed to shit in the back. Sure it was the hairstyle to have in the early 2000s and it definitely was a sign of being the coolest kid at the skatepark, but it took too long, was flat before you knew it and was not good for our hair.

Brokencyde

I don’t have anything to add on this one.

Shag Bands

Emo-Kids-bracelets

These deserve to get in the bin for the name, for fashion reasons and for the weirdly disturbing ‘meanings’ behind them. There’s differing opinions on their name and meaning depending who you talk to, but I think we can all agree it doesn’t seem okay. If you’re curious, there’s a whole Vice article about them here.

I can’t remember how we did it and really struggled to find this, but I found a site that makes it happen, just in case you did want to bring it back: https://www.messletters.com/en/

We obviously had a lot of time on our hands.

The over emotional and grammatically incorrect icons of the 00s. Don’t get me wrong I found a lot of comfort in scrolling through this website for hours, printing off my favourites to add to my school planner and making watercolour studies of them for my art projects, but now the cringe level is just too high I can’t cope.

Myspace Top Eight

Ranking your friends to a superior group of eight, and then ranking those eight from 1 - 8 was a stressful experience, and while there was a weird sense of power when you removed someone who had wronged you from your top spot, I think we’re better of without the competition element of friendships.

Even with all of this, I look back incredibly fondly on my peak emo years. The emo fashion, music and alternative culture helped shaped the person I became, and I made lifelong friendship because of our shared interest in emo, pop-punk and alternative stuff. So yeah, we were pretty cringe, but I can live with that. And of course, it wasn’t all bad. If you need reminding of the superior emo trends, you can find them on my blog 00s Emo Trends That Deserve A Comeback in 2021.
