Spring Forward: Why Now Is The Best Time To Set Your 2019 Goals

 

Welcome to spring.

This week in the northern hemisphere we are experiencing the spring equinox on March 20th, as well as a full moon. There’s big energy this week which is perfect for moving forward, making changes and moving away from the things we’re holding onto from the winter. I’d like to clarify I am in no way an astrology expert, I am simply sharing my experience and my thoughts on how we can make use of the earth in our daily lives. I will put some links at the bottom to some resources to read further on astrology if that’s something you’re interested in.

Every living thing lives in cycles, we have cycles going on all around and within us. From the daily cycle, monthly cycles and yearly, and also longer than that. Feel like you’ve been living in a constant winter for the last two years? - I promise you are not alone and there is a way out. There are internal and external cycles that exist that we cannot change, but we are all on our own paths with our own factors and experiences. So if you are feeling the feels of winter right now, know that everything comes back around, and be ready to see the signs of your spring when it starts to emerge.

If you’re looking to set goals for yourself and make some changes in your life, this time of the year is the perfect time to do it. Personally, I do set goals in January for the rest of the year, but I don’t usually take action on them immediately. That isn’t a conscious decision, I just struggle big time with motivation when it’s dark and cold. January and February are deep pits of shit for a lot of us, and its totally okay to admit that. To me it makes no sense to come out on the first of January and expect to change who you are as a person. If you celebrate at the end of the year; for a lot of us, we’ve had a month of celebrating, indulging and living in excess. And that takes its fucking toll. It’s not healthy to go from 100 to zero overnight. If anything, January 1st may be the worst time to try and make worthwhile changes.

It’s more beneficial to spend that time recovering from the past year, giving yourself a break (literally if possible, if not, then just be kind to yourself, work on forgiving yourself for all of last years’ shit.) and reflecting on what you want to bring into the coming year. And before you know it, it’s bloody March anyway.

Look around, things are starting to emerge. Trees are starting to regain their leaves, daffodils are sprouting, baby animals are being born; you might even find yourself saying ‘wow, I can’t believe it’s still light out’. If you can notice these things, you can start to notice signs of spring within yourself. This might be restlessness, inspiration, crazy late night ideas, or just waking up and taking a shower. If you’ve outgrown your current situation, now is the perfect time to step into a new version of yourself. This isn’t about changing who you are, this isn’t ‘New Year New Me’ pt. 2. This is about growth, it’s natural and it’s necessary. And often it’s uncomfortable and messy.

So if you’re looking to make some changes, and set some goals for yourself, this week is a great week to do so. Take your time to really reflect on what you want, what changes you need to make to get there. Think big, but start small. You can’t do everything all at once so think about the ideal situation, what kind of person do you want to be, what job do you want, where do you want to live? And then break it right down. What small thing can you do this week that will get you closer to that goal.

An important thing to remember right now is that you have to do this on your terms. At your pace, with your values, heading to your own destination. It’s not helpful to compare your progress to others, it doesn’t matter where you are when you start, or where 'Susie From Instagram Started Just 6 Weeks Ago', this is so personal, it’s just about you.

So take the time to reflect, forgive yourself for being who you are, where you are, and even for all the times you’ve fucked up. I’ve created a goal setting worksheet, along with a help sheet.
